Heavy equipment transport positions machinery where it is needed. When transport logistics fail, the entire project schedule suffers.
Early Planning and Mobilisation
The most effective transport logistics plans start during the project planning phase, not at mobilisation. Work with your transport provider to assess the project’s total transport requirements — daily water volumes, material movement quantities, equipment relocation schedules and any specialised transport needs.
Early engagement allows the transport provider to secure the right vehicles, plan routes and establish supply chains before the project reaches peak activity.
Phased Resource Allocation
Construction projects move through distinct phases, each with different transport demands. Earthworks require heavy tipper and excavator transport. Structural phases need consistent water supply. Fit-out and finishing involve lighter, more frequent deliveries.
Plan your transport resources to match each phase. Over-resourcing during low-demand periods wastes budget, while under-resourcing during peak periods creates bottlenecks that delay the entire project.
Site Access and Layout
Understanding site access constraints is critical for transport planning. Narrow access roads limit vehicle size. Turning circles determine trailer length. On-site storage locations affect delivery frequency and vehicle type requirements.
Conduct a site access assessment with your transport provider before committing to vehicle specifications. The most cost-effective vehicle is the one that can actually access your site safely and efficiently.
Coordination with Other Trades
Transport operations do not exist in isolation. Water deliveries must coordinate with concrete pours. Material haulage must align with crane operations. Equipment transport must avoid conflicting with other site activities.
Integrate transport schedules into the master project schedule. Daily coordination meetings should include transport updates to prevent conflicts and optimise shared resources.
Contingency Planning
Even the best plans face disruptions — vehicle breakdowns, extreme weather, supply chain delays or sudden changes in project scope. Build contingency capacity into your transport plan. Maintain relationships with backup providers who can mobilise quickly when needed.
Document contingency procedures and ensure all stakeholders understand them before disruptions occur. The cost of contingency planning is always less than the cost of unplanned downtime.
