Why Tyre Management Matters
For commercial transport fleets, tyres represent a significant operating cost and the primary interface between the vehicle and the road. Proper tyre management directly impacts safety, fuel efficiency, vehicle handling and overall operating costs.
Pressure Monitoring
Correct tyre pressure is the single most important factor in tyre life and safety. Under-inflated tyres wear faster, consume more fuel and are prone to overheating and blowouts. Over-inflated tyres have reduced grip and wear unevenly.
In the UAE’s extreme temperatures, tyre pressure monitoring requires particular attention. Ambient temperature changes of 20 degrees or more between early morning and midday can cause significant pressure fluctuations. Check pressures when tyres are cold for the most accurate readings.
Tread Depth and Wear Patterns
Monitor tread depth regularly and replace tyres before they reach the legal minimum. Uneven wear patterns indicate alignment, balance or suspension issues that should be addressed before new tyres are fitted.
Common wear patterns and their causes include: centre wear from over-inflation, edge wear from under-inflation, one-sided wear from alignment issues and cupping from suspension problems or wheel imbalance.
Rotation and Alignment
Regular tyre rotation extends overall tyre life by ensuring even wear across all positions. For commercial vehicles, rotation schedules should account for the different wear characteristics of steering, drive and trailer positions.
Wheel alignment should be checked after any impact with curbs, potholes or other road hazards. Misalignment causes rapid, uneven wear and increases fuel consumption.
Storage and Lifespan
Store spare tyres in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and chemical exposure. tyres degrade over time even when not in use, so implement a first-in-first-out rotation for spare stock.
Most commercial tyres have a recommended maximum service life of five to seven years regardless of tread depth. Track tyre age as well as condition to ensure replacements happen before age-related degradation becomes a safety concern.

Select tyres based on the vehicle’s operating conditions, load requirements and performance expectations. Premium tyres often deliver better value through longer life, improved fuel efficiency and better wet grip compared to budget alternatives.
